Image
The Maori are Polynesians living in New Zealand, and they date back to the 11th century. Originally, the Maori people were hunters and warriors, but they soon turned to the agriculture way of living. As of today, the Maori mainly live in the cities, but they stay closely to their tribes. Their villages are fortified with in the center the marae, an open space on which the whare hui, or the meeting house is located. Which this building is very symbolic body of their ancestors. With watch towers that have 'pahu' in them. The 'pahu' is a wooden plate that functions like an alarm gong.      As of today, their music is mainly vocal. It can be divided into two categories: the recitatives and the songs. When it comes to the recitatives have no fixed pitch organization and the tempo is much higher than the song's tempo.  From Christianity the use of instruments was kind of neglected. The Maori used to use aerophones and idiophones, and of course recently with the com

With this blog, I wanted to learn about Japans traditional music. It is such a wonderful island, and I wondered, where may Japan learn their music? With Japan being a big island, they developed most of their music themselves, but they have had influences from other countries as well. Japan gain their influences through Korea and China. Korea served as a bridge with Chinese musical ideas. Their music can be considered a combination of vocal or instrumental. It is full of emotional expressions, and many instruments originated in China and Japan adapted them to their local needs.     When it comes to Japanese traditional music, it's referred to it historical folk music. These are two forms both being the oldest form known as: shomoy (Buddhist chanting) and Gagaku (theatrical court music). Gagaku is the oldest musical traditional in Japan. It includes two styles known as kigaku (instrumental music) and seigaku (form of vocal music). Shomyo translate to 'voice' and 'wisdom&#

When I asked my mom these questions, I was unsure what response I was going to get. However, I knew it would take a while to fully get my answer. My mother is not a picky person when it comes to anything. She is very opened minded, and she enjoys almost any thing because of just her mindset towards life. Therefore, let get into what Music my mom grew up with and her music taste now. First, what did my mom grow up listening to? Also, what were some of her favorite songs and genres? My mother starts off with telling me about the babysitter she had. She would give her song albums like Saturday Night Fever, Grease, and the Bee Gees. She would also watch Solid Gold Dancers on TV growing up as well. She goes on to say that she was showing her age, and that growing up it was more of the Disco genre type of music describing the dancing as 'very flamboyant'. Her babysitter had a disco ball and huge speakers in her basement. She said while listening to all these different disco genre mus

Lets Get Funky!

Funk music started in 1960s. it was created to be more of a rhythmic and danceable format mixing of soul jazz, and R&B. Funk was absorbed and reconstituted in New Orleans. It was during and after the Civil Rights Movement. It favored the message like the blues and used what was going on around them to relay the message to the world. It was to challenge the daily struggles and hardships fought by the lower an hard-working class communities. Some examples of these songs are, " Say It Loud- I'm Black and I'm Proud," "Superfly," "Soul Power" and "Who's Gonna Take the Weight." Funk can be easily tracked back to one simple man.  This man is known as James Brown, he was a very successful soul singer before he joined the bandwagon of Funk. Mr. Brown developed his own signature groove which had emphasized the downbeat. It was heavily emphasis the first beat of the measure to etch his distinctive sound that he wanted instead of having the b

When it came to the Native American section, I found it very intriguing on their dances. One thing I wanted to look further into is how many different dances they have, and the origin on the dances. With the Grass Dance first, and it is the oldest traditional dance that the Native Americans do. This dance was to flatten the grass in the arena before other celebrations. It was considered a man’s dance, but there has been woman to perform it as well. If there were woman performers, they worn men regalia though. Music Gender

When it comes to music, it is full of diversity. There are several types of music and forms. Whenever it comes to a certain form of music, it is selected specifically by gender . Most of these bands are boy bands. Yes, there are girl bands, but majority bands are mainly boys. Which the typical boy bands are a group of five boys that are appealing to the younger female eye, and they have typical catchy pop songs. When I first noticed boy bands, whenever my sister was going over the hills for One Direction. I've never understood why all these girls in my grade or around my age are so obsessed with boy bands. In particular, whenever friend groups would get together, all they do is go around and pick which one of the boys were their favorites. To me, this doesn't make any sense at all. I've never really liked their music, and I don't understand the boy band hype. One day I asked my sister why she was so obsessed with Harry Styles? She told me all these different things abo

Hey! For my first blog, I’m going to share some things about myself! First I’ll start with my go to music or favorite type of music. Most of the time when I’m listening to music I’m doing something that I need to focus on or zone in for games. Therefore, my music normally always has to have a solid beat to it. If I can nod my head to it I’m listening to it. I click on my Pandora and play my Dababy radio station. I do this, because I suck at either picking a song, or remember the song title and artist. It just plays music that I either know, like, dislike, or I didn’t know. However, my favorite song right now would have to be “Praise God” by Kanye West ft. Travis Scott and Baby Keem.  Next, I would like to share a song that I have a connection with. A song that I will always have a connecting with is a song that I share with my dad. He was always there for me as a kid when it came to softball. He always thought it was important to play this one particular song before every tournament.
