Family Music

When I asked my mom these questions, I was unsure what response I was going to get. However, I knew it would take a while to fully get my answer. My mother is not a picky person when it comes to anything. She is very opened minded, and she enjoys almost any
thing because of just her mindset towards life. Therefore, let get into what Music my mom grew up with and her music taste now.

First, what did my mom grow up listening to? Also, what were some of her favorite songs and genres? My mother starts off with telling me about the babysitter she had. She would give her song albums like Saturday Night Fever, Grease, and the Bee Gees. She would also watch Solid Gold Dancers on TV growing up as well. She goes on to say that she was showing her age, and that growing up it was more of the Disco genre type of music describing the dancing as 'very flamboyant'. Her babysitter had a disco ball and huge speakers in her basement. She said while listening to all these different disco genre music's she would dance all the dance moves. Just imagine 50-year-old mother showing you these dance moves. She even listened to a lot of rock and roll by Elvis, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Beatles, the Coasters, and a lot more! With her upbringing music was very big. Her mother had her take piano lessons and having a banjo and church bells around the house was a must!

Then, we move towards the middle school time era for my mother. She started to incorporate the old southern soul music. Which includes Aretha Franklin to Eric Clapton. She also kept up with the metal rock genre like Nirvana & Black Hole. With throwing in a different genre all together, she also enjoyed listening to the classics like Wolfgang and Beethoven. She goes on to say, "I had an ear to pick out each instrument and become obsessed with string sections or bass sections of all music". She then explained to me she got this from my grandmother who could play anything she heard at will.

Now, she still loves all different forms of music. The bass in rap still interest her more than the actual rapping, but she especially enjoys going back to the southern soul and rock like Leonard Skinner and Allman Brothers, Marshal Tucker Band, and her newly favorite Blackberry Smoke. With her latest and newly love is the spoons. Her mother could play the spoon like no other! So, she sometimes enjoys going onto YouTube and listening to The Spoon Lady. She says, "When I listen to the lady playing the Spoons, I hear our roots from Walhalla South Carolina".

  1. The story about the babysitter was so interesting. It's so funny she had a disco ball and speakers where she would show your mom new much and they would dance.

  2. Great job with your interview! I also love disco music so it is cool to hear about someone else talking about it. It is also good to see that music had a big impact in her life.
