Music Gender

When it comes to music, it is full of diversity. There are several types of music and forms. Whenever it comes to a certain form of music, it is selected specifically by gender. Most of these bands are boy bands. Yes, there are girl bands, but majority bands are mainly boys. Which the typical boy bands are a group of five boys that are appealing to the younger female eye, and they have typical catchy pop songs. When I first noticed boy bands, whenever my sister was going over the hills for One Direction.

I've never understood why all these girls in my grade or around my age are so obsessed with boy bands. In particular, whenever friend groups would get together, all they do is go around and pick which one of the boys were their favorites. To me, this doesn't make any sense at all. I've never really liked their music, and I don't understand the boy band hype. One day I asked my sister why she was so obsessed with Harry Styles? She told me all these different things about him, which were personal about him. I just didn’t understand how she knew all this information. This led to me realization that these boys are under a super microscope of all these people. I couldn’t imagine having so many people know me without ever meeting me. So I kept thinking, why are boy bands so popular? It made me reflect on why my sister did it, and it was because she felt she was related to him in some way. Which in a way, this is how we all pick our music. Whatever music we relate to the most is the one we like to call our favorite. So why are boys' groups more popular than girls' groups?

I believe (just my opinion) that when it comes to girls, they prefer to be associated with a boy band. The girls want to have that connection with that artist, so they'll invest a lot in that band to learn more about them. However, whenever it comes to boys with girl bands or whoever it is are more into listening to just the music they create. So, I feel like boy and girl groups are a big gender-defining group. Which I know that with music it is very open, but whenever it comes to bands, they are more popular with boy bands

  1. I totally agree with you about boy bands being more popular. Growing up my friends and my sister along with a few of her friends also were very head over hills with a lot of boy bands. I really wasn't into them much either and don't see the hype. When it comes to why which one would be more popular I also agree with the part you said about them wanting to have that connection, but I also think sometimes it has something to do with the industry and how they want each specific group to display themselves sometimes.

  2. Omg, I literally just had this conversation with one of my friends! I feel like the lack of girl bands is due to there not being enough "fans" to share. Depending on their bands targeted demographic, which usually are girls 12 and up, the audience are usually going through an influential period of their lives. And sadly, being boy-crazy sells more than girl empowerment. But I agree with you whole-heartedly, there needs to be more girl band representation.
